Artificial Intelligence Use Guidelines

Artificial Intelligence Use Guidelines

Purpose:

The primary objective is to guide the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in our schools, ensuring they enhance learning while protecting student privacy, promoting equity, and maintaining a respectful and responsible learning atmosphere.

The use of AI programs in daily instruction will be left to the discretion of the classroom teacher. If incorporated, it is highly recommended that teachers complete the AI Foundations for Educators course by Common Sense Education, or have had training from the Director of Digital Learning or other outside resources. It is also recommended that students in Grades 6-12 complete, or have exposure to AI Literacy lessons, before they use AI tools.

1. Responsible Use:

Students may use AI tools to support their learning activities only with prior teacher approval. The use of AI should be aimed at enhancing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, while fostering independent learning. It shall not be used in place of student thinking.

2. Privacy and Security:

All AI tools and platforms must comply with district and state regulations on data privacy and security. Student data must be protected at all times, and any AI tool used should have a clear privacy policy that aligns with these standards.

3. Bias and Fairness:

Be aware that AI-generated content may possess biases or inaccuracies. Always verify AI-produced content by using trusted sources. Teachers and administrators must ensure that AI applications do not reinforce stereotypes or inequalities.

4. Academic Integrity:

All assignments are subject to a verbal review to ensure understanding and authenticity of student work. AI-generated content must be cited, and its role in the completion of assignments must be transparent. The use of AI to create presentations, take tests, complete assignments, write papers, or complete assignments without prior teacher approval is strictly prohibited and constitutes cheating. The student handbook procedures will be followed in this instance.

5. Accountability:

Teachers, students, and administrators share responsibility for the ethical use of AI. Any misuse of AI tools will be addressed according to the district’s code of conduct, ensuring that AI serves as a positive force in the educational environment. Given the inaccuracy of AI detection tools, each case will be assessed individually rather than relying solely on these platforms to determine responsibility when plagiarism or the use of AI tools is suspected.

These guidelines ensure that AI is used ethically and effectively while safeguarding students' rights and fostering a fair and secure learning environment
